Taling Ngam might look hard to pronounce but it is an easy beach to stay on. It is located on the west coast of Koh Samui between the beaches of Lipa Noi and Thong Tanote. Taling Ngam is in one of the quietest areas of the island which is favored by a number of developers looking to sell private residences.
With the global downturn in the economy many of those people with cash to spare to buy a luxury villa in Thailand have now decided to put their money in safer havens. This is probably a good thing for Taling Ngam.
Those who want a good beach without a commercial feel and far from the brash and undignified behavior on display sometimes in Chaweng and Lamai need look no further than Taling Ngam.
The beach is long and has white sand. Trees and palms line the beach and behind is virgin jungle. The area has some of the most pristine natural scenery on the coast of Koh Samui. The sea is good for swimming, and the sunset is magical over the ocean with the Ang Thong Marine Park islands in the distance.
Along the beach there is a small fishing village, a few resorts and some local seafood restaurants. This gives Taling Ngam a certain timeless feel, like it had only recently been discovered. Needless to say there aren't any nightclubs or bars with parties.
There are a few budget resorts to stay in with basic bungalows. There are also a few good value mid-range accommodation options. Villa La Kosta is located on a hill behind the beach. It is a private villa that has been converted. There are 12 suites each one with professional interior design.
On the beach is The Sunset Beach Resort. It has boutique accommodation that features a few Jacuzzi and private pool villas. The resort has great facilities that include spa, fitness center, flotation tank and sauna. The Sunset Beach Resort has made some green design decisions which include a desalination plant that provides fresh water for the guests.
If you want to stay in a green resort, or you want a beach with a timeless island feel then Taling Ngam is worth a few days holiday. Whether it is worth buying a villa there is another matter.
Getting to Taling Ngam & Getting Around
Taling Ngam is about a 15 minute taxi ride from Nathon. The airport is 30 minutes away, as is the tourist center of Chaweng. Taling Ngam is known as the most remote beach in Koh Samui. This reputation is partly based on its distance from the main tourists hubs. For those who like to go shopping or seek night entertainment renting a car or motorbike is recommended.
